Your City and You
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16 (NIV)
Bible Reading: Genesis 19
Did you know you have a certain responsibility to your city as a child of God? A story that speaks to this question is the story of Lot in Sodom and Gomorrah. No doubt, Lot enjoyed the love of God. Lot was Abraham’s nephew and he lived in the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah was a perverted, unrighteous and wicked city. They did everything contrary to God’s decree and commands. The city easGod decided to destroy the city and He informed his friend, Abraham. Abraham pleaded with the Lord to spare the city if there was found ten righteous individual. Unfortunately, there were no ten righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah. Finally, the city was going to be destroyed because the cry of the city is waxen great before the face of the Lord. The Lord sent his angels and the people of city insisted on molesting the angels even after Lot offered them his daughters who were virgins. The angel of the Lord intervened and informed Lot of their intention to destroy the city. Eventually, they stirred Lot and his family to move out of the city. What are some of the lessons we can learn from the story of Lot? First, the prayer of the righteous avails much. God honours the righteous. Secondly, the impact of a righteous person can be significant in a particular place and at any given time. No wonder the Bible says that the effective prayer of the righteous avails much (James 5:16). God can go to any length to keep the righteous. In the case of Sodom of Gomorrah, if God had found ten righteous people, He would have spared the city. Finally, the importance of evangelism cannot be overemphasized. As children of God, are you praying for your city? What are you doing to bring people to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ in your city? The angel of the Lord couldn’t do anything until Lot and his family left the city (Genesis 19:22). Finally, the city was destroyed and an unfortunate tragedy happened to Lot, his wife looked back when they have been warned never to look back. She turned to a pillar of salt.
Daily Confession: Thank you Heavenly Father for your amazing love that sustains my city. Help me to preach the gospel of Christ in my city and Let righteousness reign supreme in Jesus name, amen.
Intercessory prayer: Pray for your city for God’s intervention. Decree that God’s righteousness be established and the light of Christ Jesus will shine in and upon your city.
Hymn: What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!y
