Intercede for Your City I
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16 (NIV)
Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 2:1-3
The instruction in today’s Bible reading is simple and straightforward but how many people obey it? Apostle Paul admonishes Timothy to be an intercessor. He identifies the set of people to pray for. First of all, supplication, prayer and intercession are to be made for all men (1 Timothy 2:1). ‘For all men’ means everybody. No exception is made regardless of gender, race, or geographical location etc. As Christians, we are to be intercessors for everyone in every civilization, in every country and city, pray for families, the church of God, every unit of socialization etc. When we intercede for others, we are declaring God’s authority over situations and lives. We are taking charge for Jesus and asking “Thy [God] kingdom come and Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10)
Apostle Paul continues his instruction to Timothy. We are also to pray for kings and everyone in authority— meaning anyone in authority which made the list is endless. Most times we think only of politicians but Paul’s list include heads of schools, pastors, traditional leaders, teachers, health workers etc. Why should we do this? ‘so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty’ (1 Timothy 2:2). Perhaps we are not leading a quiet and peaceable life in all goodliness and honesty because we are not interceding appropriately. Dear friends, here’s the word for today: be the kind of intercessor God wants you to be. Intercede for everyone and quit being selfish in your prayer.
Action Point: Spend quality time to intercede for others
Intercessory prayer: Pray for your country, state, city, church, school etc.
Hymn: “Must I go, and empty handed?”
Must I meet my Savior so?
Not one soul with which to greet Him,
Must I empty handed go?
