And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me. When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. Ruth 1:16-18 (KJV)
Bible Reading: Ruth 1
The book of Ruth in the Bible has a compelling narrative that holds the story of a lady from an uncircumcised nation but through an unwavering resolution to follow her mother-in-law, she was engrafted into the commonwealth of Israel. In fact, she became part of Jesus’ genealogy. Ruth was originally from Moab. She married Chilion, the second son of Naomi. Naomi’s husband, Elimelech and her two sons (Mahlon and Chilion) died and Naomi decided to return to Judah. Ruth decided to follow Naomi despite Naomi’s persuasion for Ruth to turn back. In fact, the wife of Mahlon, Naomi’s first son, Orpah returned to after Naomi convinced her to return. “And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law, go, return each to her mother’s house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me… Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons” (Ruth 1:8 &12). After Naomi’s convinced on, Orpah returned but Ruth refused to return to her people, rather she vowed to follow Naomi until death. Without knowing what lies ahead, Ruth took a step of faith and followed her mother-in-law and God counted her action as an act of faith. It was a deliberate choice to follow unwavering no matter the cost. If it was nowadays, many would have considered Naomi as a cursed and witch mother-in-law so no one will follow her. Yet, Ruth followed her and considered Naomi’s people her people, and Naomi’s God her God. As we study the book of Ruth,  I encourage you to decide to follow Jesus regardless of the situation. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. (Jude 1:24-25 KJV).
