Obey God First
And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord ? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22
Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 15
When I was growing up, my parents used to say this words, “obey first and then complain”. For what it worth, that was the rule in our house and it paid off growing up in a Christian home because my parents raised us with the Bible. Obedience is compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another’s authority. It means to yield wholeheartedly and cheerfully to an instruction or an authority. Obedience is not only important to earthly parents, and man-made authorities, it is important to God because to obey is to submit. In our Bible reading today, God gave king Saul a clear instruction: “Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not” (1 Samuel 15:3a). For every commandment of God, there is an intention. Unfortunately, king Samuel decided not to follow God’s instruction. And God told prophet Samuel: “It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for his is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel and he cried unto the Lord all night” (I Samuel 15:11). It seemed God “regretted” His choice of making Saul a king over the Israelites. Disobedience brought God to lament about His decision of making Saul to lead his people. May God never grieve over our lives. Speaking through prophet Samuel, God would later equate the sin of disobedience to witchcraft because it was the sin of disobedience, that is rebellion against God’s authority by Lucifer and human’s (Adam and Eve) participation in the rebellion that brought humanity to where we were today (Genesis 3). Dear friends, obey God first in everything because it is only if you are willing and obedient that you will eat the fruit of the land (Isaiah 1:19-20). Obey God even if it does not make sense to you at the moment. As my parents will always say, when you obey, you are showing respect and submission to the authority involved, and you will be rewarded ultimately.
Daily Confession: My Heavenly Father I choose to obey You and follow Your instruction with the whole of my heart in Jesus name.
Intercessory prayer: Pray for your colleagues at work, school etc for peace upon them and as many that are yet to know Jesus that they will come to know Him.
Hymn: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.
