A Resolved Mind (I)
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile (taint, dishonour) himself with the king’s finest food or with the wine which the king drank; so he asked the commander of the officials that he might [be excused so that he would] not defile himself. Daniel 1:8 AMP
Bible Reading: Judges 4
Yesterday we started by stating that resolution starts and ends with an individual. This truth will help many people who always find excuses when they are not resolute in their pursuit or unable to achieve their goal. It is important to start taking responsibility. Resolution is the backbone of any successful venture. In fact, any civilization that does not have people with strong resolution will decline and dissolve into extinction. For instance, the individuals we celebrate today who made ground-breaking discoveries were resolute in their pursuit. As rightly mentioned yesterday, to be used of God requires resolution to pay the price and follow God genuinely. This brings us to today’s reflection on resolution. A resolved mind requires focus on something (that is, setting a definite goal), a strong conviction about the pursuit, faith and bravery.
Deborah in our Bible reading today is an embodiment of these qualities. Deborah was determined to fight the battle. She believed God’s word and set her eye on the mark. The people of Israel had been oppressed by Jabin, the king of Canaan for twenty years. Deborah, a judge (the only female judge mentioned in the Bible) and a prophet, prophesied to Balak (commander of Israel army) that God will draw Sisera (commander of Jabin’s army), to River Kishon. Balak refused to go to battle except he was accompanied by a prophet. Deborah agreed to go with Balak but declared that the glory of the victory will belong to a woman. Sisera heard about the rebellion in the camp of the Israelites and took nine hundred chariots of iron and host of people. Balak went down Mount Tabor with ten thousand men and fought the battle. Sisera’s army was pursued as far as Harosheth of the Gentiles but Sisera escaped on foot and came to the tent of Jael. Sisera lied down to rest, requested a drink, but Jael gave him milk and while Sisera was asleep she hammered a tent-pin through his temple. Here’s the word for today: Regardless of the challenges and the opposition, resolve to pursue God’s plan for your life. Set your mind on the goal, work towards it and believe in God’s ability to fulfil His plan and purpose for your life.
Daily Confession: For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his pleasure (Philippians 2:13).
Intercessory prayer: Pray for divine help for those who are in need of God’s help in their marriage, finances and other areas of their lives.
Hymn: There is power, power, wonder working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.
