The Whole Duty of Man (II)
“In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome”. 1 John 5:3 (NIV)
Bible Reading: Matthew 26:36-46
The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant (Psalm 25:14). What’s the parameter to determine whether you fear God or not? Keep His commandments. Here’s how Jesus puts it: “If you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15). Your proof of fear and love for God is by how much you keep His commandment. Jesus Christ reiterates again “if a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:23). In our Bible reading today, Jesus Christ showed us what it means to fear His Heavenly Father from His experience at Gethsemane. He was about to face the greatest humiliation in human history. He would be ridiculed, betrayed by close friends, and ultimately be crucified. The reality of the cross dawned on Jesus to the point that his soul was sorrowful, even unto death (Matthew 26:38). At some point, he asked God to pass the cup from him. Finally, He submitted his will to God. This is what it means to keep God’s commandments: Total submission to God’s instructions, plan and purpose. For instance, even when it is difficult, you choose to love because that’s what God’s word says and that’s what God wants you to do. God’s commandments are not burdensome (1 John 5:3). Jesus did not only resurrect on the third day, He has a name that is above every other name (Philippians 2:1-11). And through Jesus ultimate obedience and sacrifice on the cross of Calvary, we are redeemed. Dear friends, the whole duty of man is summed up in the Preacher’s words: Fear God and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). May the Lord continually help you to be devoted to his word so that you can know His commandments and obey him every moment.
