Speaking Life
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringers forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringer he forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45
Bible Reading: Proverbs 18:21
The Bible describes the human tongue as powerful. Despite being a small organ, the tongue has both a life-giving power and the ability to cause great harm too. The Bible characterizes human into either good or evil based on the words that we speak. Here, the word “good” or “evil” is a reflection of what goes on in our hearts, the thoughts that we dwell on and what we gaze upon. The things we look at are important because the eyes is the gateway to our heart, and from the things we watch and meditate upon, treasures are being formed in our hearts. To ensure that these treasures are good, we must learn to guard our hearts with all diligence, Prov. 4:23.
To ensure that our words are life-giving, we must pay attention to the contents and intents of our hearts, we must meditate upon God’s word and stay away from things that can contaminate our heart. As believers, we must understand the importance of our words and how powerful the impacts can be. The creation story is a great example of this. All that God created which we see today are products of God’s words which He spake. He commanded that there be light and light appeared, same as all the animals, seas, mountains and all God’s beautiful creations. Hebrews 11:1 puts this as, “Through faith we understand that the world was framed by the word of God…” If it is possible that the world can be created by God’s word, then as believers our words can create our world too, which would imply our realities. May God help us that our words will be life-giving in order to create a positive and lasting realities for us in Jesus name.
