Who Do You Say I am?
‘…But whom say that I am?’ (Matthew 16:13)
Bible Reading: Matthew 16:13-20
Jesus Christ’s next question is intriguing in many ways: it elicits an answer that is very personal; an answer that’s based on personal knowledge and revelation of who Jesus is. After Jesus Christ heard from his disciples about other people’s thoughts about his identity, Jesus was interested in hearing from his disciples. I strongly believe that our walk with God should be like that – very personal even though we are among the people of God. This is the reason why it is important to cultivate a relationship with Jesus that is continuous and continual through fellowship.
Peter’s response was phenomenal. His answer showed that he has had a personal revelation about who Jesus is – ‘And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God’ (Matthew 16:16 KJV). Peter was in close relationship with Jesus. Peter was not just in a physical promixity, with Jesus, that is, going everywhere with Jesus, rather his physical closeness to Jesus opened a deeper connection that made him inquire about Jesus. It created a bond between both of them and a fellowship that is amazing.
Dear friends, congregational revelation cannot take the place of personal revelation. Congregational devotional and meetings can not and should not take replace your personal devotion. Like Peter, I hope that you can boldly speak about your personal revelation of Jesus to the world.
Daily Confession: Heavenly Father thank you for giving us Jesus to transform us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. Open the eyes if my heart Lord to see Jesus, amen.
