Godliness and Contentment

But godliness with contentment is great gain. I Timothy 6:6

Bible Reading: I Timothy 6: 3-10

Apostle Paul teaches us in today’s chapter about contentment because human needs are insatiable. We are reminded that godliness and contentment are interconnected and no matter what we have, it is either those things leave us or we leave them eventually. The only treasure that is true and eternal is God. Let’s briefly reflect on Apostle Paul’s counsel to Timothy on godliness and contentment. Earthly possessions are necessary but contentment is important so that our hearts are not lifted unto vanity. Apostle Paul was not against being rich as Christians, rather, his counsel was against those whose hearts are centred on worldly wealth. He is concerned about those who are greedy, those who lust after worldly possession and would do anything to get rich. Such people can lie, kill, steal, and even deny God simply because of momentary gains. Apostle Paul reminds us of a trustworthy saying: “you cannot serve two masters, hence, you cannot love God and love money” for the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. In fact, Paul’s observation that “some people eager for money, [and] have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with much grief” is true in our society (Matthew 6:24 & I Timothy 6:10). We are reminded to love God and obey His command after all, what profits a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul? (Matthew 16:26). The way to keep our godliness intact is to be contented with what we have. Speaking to the Philippians on contentment, Apostle Paul writes; “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content” (Philippians 4:11). Dear friends, godliness without contentment is ungodly and unprofitable, hence, to your godliness, add contentment.

Self-Reflection: Your godliness is incomplete without contentment!

Daily Confession: Lord help me to be contented with your will; teach me contentment and help me to love You till the very end in Jesus’ name.

Intercessory prayer: Lord help our children, youths, parents, leaders and everyone in our lives to find their worth in You and not in worldly possessions.

Hymn: Father, I know that all my life

Is portioned out for me;

And the changes that are sure to come

I do not fear to see;

I ask Thee for a present mind,

Intent on pleasing Thee.
