Who Shall Ascend into the hill of the Lord?

Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. Psalm 24:3-4

Bible Reading: Psalm 24:3-4

Leviticus 10 is the story of Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron. They offered ‘strange fire’ before the Lord. They disobeyed God’s instruction and they were consumed. God is holy and it is important that we worship in spirit and truth. Another example was the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 6. Prophet Isaiah’s encounter with God made him see his filthiness. He described himself thus: ‘Then said I, woe to me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts’ (Isaiah 6:5). How can you profess you know God and still live in unrighteousness? How can you claim to be spirit-filled and tongue-speaking and still dwell in sins?

Our reading today presents us with two questions: ‘Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord Or who shall stand in his holy place?’ It sounds like a rhetorical question because he answered his questions. But these questions are not just for the emphasis they reveal something to us about God and what our attitude should be. God’s presence is so holy that He cannot behold iniquity. He cannot compromise His stand, that is why He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to die for us so that through His blood, we can boldly come to the Holy of Holies. In the Old Testament, when priests were planning to go into the Holy of Holies to present a sacrifice to God to atone for the sins of Israel, they prepared very well and refuse to allow any form of unholiness to come near them. If they were unholy, they could die in there and so a chain was attached to the leg of any priest that goes into the Holy of Holies to monitor the priest’s movement and know what to do in case something happens. God is not our mate and we need to reverence Him. Yes, he is a loving Father, a Friend, He loves us and He lives in us through His Holy Spirit, yet His character as a Holy God has not changed! He is not only holy, where He dwells is holy and anyone that comes to Him must come in holiness and righteousness.

Action Point: Worship God in His holiness today.

Intercessory prayer: Lord I pray that my generation know and praise You.

Hymn: Father all holy, bend we so lowly,

Glowing with love’s tender flame;

Father in Heaven, praises be given,

Hallowed forever Thy name.

Telling the story, spreading Thy glory,

Send forth Thy people, we pray,

Till every nation know Thy salvation,

Under Thy kingdom’s full
