Take a stand (I)

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15c (NKJV)

Bible Reading: Joshua 24

In our Bible reading today, Joshua recounted the history of the Israelites’ journey from the beginning when God promised Abraham (Genesis 12 and 15). He reminded the people of God’s faithfulness, miraculous provision and divine presence that the Israelites enjoyed throughout their journeys in the wilderness (Book of Exodus). Despite God’s numerous blessings and undeniable deeds among the Israelites, they still lived contrary to God’s instructions. Joshua reminded the children of Israel of their unfaithfulness. This made them miss the fulfilment of God’s promise because they grumbled and fumbled, rebelled and sinned against God. Joshua, therefore, saw the need for the people to decide to follow God. Joshua took a stand alongside his household to serve the Lord. They were resolved and committed to serving the Lord.

Dear friends, the choice and commitment to fear and to serve the Lord is first a personal and important stand to take. God desires that anyone that name His name be sealed with God’s seal of righteousness and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord (2 Timothy 2:19; Hebrew 12:14). God is interested in followers who will commit their lives unto Him. Further, Joshua’s declaration to serve the Lord alongside his household is worth noting. Parents, teachers and leaders etc., what’s your desire for your household? There are parents who daily invest in the salvation of their children and generations through prayers, evangelism and righteous living. Do you know the Lord and do you train your child in the way of the Lord? Joshua first referred to himself, which means that as the head of a household, he was interested in living and leading his life to serving the Lord. As a leader, what seed are you planting in the lives of your followers? That was the last documented Joshua’s national speech before he died. The importance of that speech is that he restored an entire nation to God through his stand for the Lord. Are you on the Lord’s side? God is looking for followers who will follow Him wholeheartedly and bring their household, places of influence and both generations present and unborn to the His side.

Self-Reflection: You have a level of influence on your household, hence, fear and serve the Lord

Action Point: A consistent daily devotion with your family will go a long way in knowing God.

Daily Confession: Lord Jesus I pray for Your help to live a life worthy of that Lord that will bring others to Christ. May my household be devoted unto You in spirit and in truth for Thy purpose.

Intercessory prayer: I pray that my generation come to the true knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Hymn: Thou my everlasting portion

More than friends or life to me

All along my pilgrim’s journey

Saviour let me walk with thee
