Take a stand (II)

After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Judges 2:10 (NKJV)

Bible Reading: Joshua 24

Joshua put his house in order before his death. He led by example and made the entire children of Israel commit to fear and serve the Lord. “Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel” (Joshua 24:31).  If patriarch and matriarch of faith did not stand for the Christ Jesus and pass on the gospel to the next generation, what will we have today? If past generations were concerned about themselves and refused to evangelize, preach the gospel or stand for God’s truth even at the cost of their lives, perhaps we would not have had the gospel.

Why is it so important to stand for Christ Jesus? When we stand for God, we are holding to a Legacy of faith in Christ. Through this, we are passing on the gospel of Christ to the coming generation. Despite Joshua’s giant strides and actions, there arose a generation that did not know the Lord. After the death of Joshua and elders who outlived him, “there arose a generation who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel” (Judges 2:10). It means that no one preached; reminded them of God’s miracles of the past and the Lord’s commandments. Perhaps there was no sharing of testimonies, no singing of psalms, hymns and telling of stories of God’s faithfulness enjoyed by their ancestors. No wonder we are enjoined to make a joyful noise unto the Lord, sing songs of His faithfulness, speak of his wondrous deed (that is, testify) etc. These instructions have spiritual implications. When we were young, my father would tell us his childhood stories of struggles and how God helped him. He shared his life history with us that we will pass on to our generations yet unborn by God’s grace.

Here’s the word for today: take seriously the art and act of standing for Christ, living a holy and righteous life and sharing God’s faithfulness. The spiritual lifestyle of fasting, praying, studying God’s word, family devotion etc., is important and we must learn to pass it on to the next generation if the Lord tarry.

Self-Reflection: What lifestyle/body of knowledge are you passing on to the generation behind?

Action Point: Decide to follow Christ Jesus wholeheartedly today and trust Him to help you live for Him.

Intercessory prayer: Lord Jesus Christ may my generation not fail You.

Song: Almighty God, Almighty God

Oh my generation shall praise Your name

Oh my generation shall praise Your name.
