After This Marathon, What’s Next?
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14, NIV)
Bible Reading: Psalm 1
For many Christians, the month of January is a marathon of spiritual activities such as fasting and prayer. Some churches declare fasting and prayer throughout the month. While this approach is important and we should continue, we have to also understand that the race does not end at the beginning of the year. While the spiritual exercise at the beginning of the year may be taken as a marathon, the journey itself is a sprint. The commitment to the ministry of prayer and the word has to be an everyday affair. In our reading today, the Psalmist offers us the way to sustain a vibrant walk with God: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of the sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2). Dear friend, the culture of praying and studying the word of God you have started building through the early year spiritual exercise, continue in it. Do not stop. Spend quality time with God daily. Now that the early year fasting is over, there may not be any daily prayer in church, nor a daily reminder from pastors, I encourage you to deliberately create a sustainable system for your spiritual growth. For instance, you can fast once a week, set a time in the day to study God’s word, create time for evangelism and attend church services. May God help you to focus on God and growth in Jesus’ name.
Daily Confession: I will not backslide; my delight will be in the law of the Lord in Jesus’ name.
Intercessory prayer: I pray for spiritual strength for every Christian in my sphere of influence in Jesus’ name.
Hymn: I’m pressing on the upward way
New heights I’m gaining every day
Still praying as I upward bound,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
