The Lord’s Word (V)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

Bible Reading: Isaiah 43:1-5

Over the past few days, we have been examining our theme scripture for the year. We started from the Psalmist declaration that the Lord is his shepherd. God is personal and He wants to get personal with you. Beyond the general and congregation faith, God is interested in you. Be determined to spend quality time on your pursuit of God this year.

Today, we will focus on one of God’s assurances and promise to us. He will be with us. The psalmist asserts that when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, God will be with us, hence there’s no need to hear any evil. In his book titled, “A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, Philip Keller, notes that shepherds use a rod (a short, heavy club-like device) to protect the gentle and harmless flock from predators or reprimand unruly sheep that pick on others, eat the wrong plants or are oblivious to danger. The rod is also used to part the sheep’s wool to look for wounds, diseases and the overall condition of the skin. While the shepherd’s staff, a long and slender stick with a hook or crook on one end, is used to return a lamb to its mother, and frees sheep from bushes. The shepherd also leans on the staff when they are tired. The shepherd uses the rod and staff to protect, guide, lead and care for the sheep.

This reminds me of Psalm 121: 5-7 “The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.” God’s promise is true. Like Apostle clarifies in Ephesians 6:13, evil day will come. The only way to withstand is to “put on the whole armour of God.” Let God’s word comfort you. Trust that God is compassionate and loving enough to take good care of you amidst troubles and trials.

Self-Reflection: I trust in the Lord with all my heart.

Action Point: Read and meditate on at least a verse of the Bible today.

Intercessory prayer: Lord heal cities and countries that have experienced natural disasters.

Hymn: When we walk with the Lord in the light of His word

What a gooey He sheds on our way!

While we do His good will, He abides with us till

And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey

For there’s no other way

To be happy in Jesus,

Than to trust and obey.
