An Intentional Decision (II): Fear God

But the midwives feared God [with profound reverence] and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded, but they let the boy babies live. (Exodus 1:17, AMP)

Bible Reading: Exodus 1:15-20

The midwives would have followed King Pharoah’s command; after all, the result could be grievous if they were caught disobeying the king. The midwives knew that where the word of a king is, there is power, and the king is in charge of everything. Yet they decided to disobey an earthly king because they feared the heavenly King. The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of wisdom [its starting point and its essence], and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding and spiritual insight (Proverbs 9:10, AMP). To fear God is to honour Him and submit to Him. It also means to surrender totally unto Him regardless of the outcome. Like the midwives, because they had a deep respect. loyalty, reverence and awe for God’s power and authority, it was not negotiable to disregard God. The midwives’ intentional disobedience was punishable under the law, yet they would rather disobey Pharoah than dishonour God. God rewarded them because God’s mercy is upon generation after generation toward those who fear Him (Luke 1:50). Dear friends if we truly consider God our Lord, we will obey Him, no matter the cost. Just like the midwives in Egypt saddled with the responsibility to kill the Hebrew male child at birth, we will focus more on honouring God than men.
