Do Not Be Discouraged (IV)

For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry. Habakkuk 2:3 (KJV)

Bible Reading: Exodus 3

Unlike Joshua, God did not have to give a sermon to Moses about encouragement or discouragement (Joshua 1). Perhaps because Moses encountered and continued to encounter God throughout his life. His encounter while tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro was spectacular and powerful. God appeared to Moses in Sinai, the mountain of God, in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses’ encounter was spectacular because the bush was engulfed in flames, yet it did not burn. God needed to catch Moses’ attention, and that was it. The sight was amazing and as Moses leaned in to see it, God spoke to Him. For a reader of this devotional, God is seeking your attention to speak to you. Amidst your busyness, God is interested in talking to you about your purpose, are you responding? An encounter with God will dissolve that discouragement and doubt. There were many times that Moses would have been discouraged but the power and grace from his encounter with God sustained him.

Beyond the spectacle, this encounter was powerful because it changed the entire trajectory of Moses’ life. This was where Moses first talked with God (as recorded). Moses’ assignment was clear, and his course was redirected. Moses was directed, equipped and called. Dear friends, your encounter may not be as specular as Moses, but God wants to encounter you. He needs you to quiet your soul so that He can speak to you because one word from God is enough to dispel every darkness and any discouragement.

Daily Confession: Lord, encounter my life in Jesus’ name.

Intercessory prayer: We pray for healing, grace and deliverance for communities passing through collective grief in Jesus’ name.

Hymn: Lord, lift me up and let me stand,

By faith, on Heaven’s table land,

A higher plane than I have found;

Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
