Do You Know Who You Are? (VI)
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16, NIV)
Bible Reading: Genesis 31
Joseph was a true child of God who had a deep understanding of his identity. There were opportunities for him to be unfaithful, he never did. For instance, from today’s Bible reading, he was offered free access to immorality, but he refused because there was something he knew that wouldn’t allow him. He had every right to be embittered towards his brothers, but he did not because he had an understanding of God’s agenda amidst the painful experience of slavery etc.
From our Bible reading today, Joseph’s response to Potiphar’s wife showed that he knew who he was in God. Joseph says “No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”. (Genesis 39:9). Joseph’s first concern was sinning against God. Joseph was interested in pleasing God. He knew that without peace and holiness, no man shall see the Lord (Hebrew 12:14). God’s Presence was the most important thing and committing adultery will leave him empty of God’s presence. So he ran away. Although his action set him up for prison, he was set apart for God. Dear friends, there are somethings that you won’t do if you know your identity in Christ and there are somethings you will embrace because you know who you are in Christ. The question is: do you know who you are in Christ?
Action Point: Identify a Bible verse that speaks to the core of your identity in Christ.
Intercessory Prayer: We pray for children and youths for deeper understanding of their identity in Christ in Jesus
Hymn: Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch; like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
