Effectual Fervent Prayer

The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous avails much. James 5:16

Bible Reading: Acts 12:5-12

At our last Wednesday lunch prayer meeting, one of the attendees (a pastor) shared with us our God is raising Christians to come together in our city to pray. He has been living in our city for over twenty years so he was delighted that after twenty years, there are over ten praying groups across the city from the university to government offices. We prayed for God’s unity among the saints and the churches because our prayer is powerful as Christians if we are united (Deuteronomy 32:30). In our Bible reading today, the church came together to pray for the release of Apostle Peter. The church understood that our righteousness is not of our own (Philippians 3:9), rather we have become the righteousness of God through Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21). Also, Jesus has given the church the power to legislate God’s kingdom values here on earth (Matthew 16:18). The church is powerful system instituted by God to reflect God’s goodness and also to be an active participants in carrying out God’s kingdom agenda. For Apostle Peter, the church prayed and God answered. In the case of John the Baptist and Stephen, it was not recorded that the church prayed. Perhaps they would not have died the way they did if the church prayed. The church praying starts with individual Christians who make up the church to pray. It starts with each family raising a prayer altar. It means every denomination will take prayer seriously so that together we can stand in the gap for our city, nation, the world at large. Dear friends, if you have given your life to Jesus, then you have become the righteousness of God through Jesus. Your effectual fervent prayer avails much. So stop underating your prayer and start praying for things to change in any aspect of your life and others.

Daily Confession: I receive grace to pray through in Jesus’ name.

Intercessory prayer: I pray for renewal of faith and hope for anyone who may have given up on life and on faith.

Hymn: Oh, how praying rests the weary!

Prayer will change the night to day.

So, when life gets dark and dreary,

Don’t forget to pray.
