Be Strong and Courageous (II)

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Joshua 1:7, NIV

Bible Reading: Joshua 1:6-9

God is always ahead. He knows what is ahead even while He is with us in the present. His omnipresence and sovereignty mean He sees, knows and is in charge. When God commands, “be strong and courageous”, it is not is suggestion or recommendation. Like a soldier getting ready for a battle, fear is an enemy. No matter how big or small a troupe is, if an opponent smells fear, the troupe is gone. In today’s Bible reading, God’s encouragement to Joshua was important because God knew the journey ahead. He also knew the set of people Joshua would be leading. God gave Joshua a mandate, “… the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them” (Joshua 1:2, NLT). God is a loving Father who deeply cares about us. If Joshua was not afraid, God wouldn’t have commanded him three times to be strong and courageous (vs 6a, 7a and 9a).

God gave Joshua a recipe to overcome fear and discouragement which we will focus on in the next few days– Joshua 1:7-8 “…Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then, you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Dear friend, why not focus on God’s instruction instead of the situation that brings you fear?

Daily Confession: No need for fear because “God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” in Jesus name (1 Timothy 1:7, KJV)

Intercessory Prayer: Lord, we pray for peace across different nations where there is turmoil in Jesus’ name.

Hymn: Take my life and let it be

consecrated, Lord, to thee.

take my moments and my days;

let them flow in endless praise,

let them flow in endless praise.
