A Heart of Worship (II)
‘…God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth’ (John 4:24, NIV)
Bible Reading: John 4:21-24
‘What is the value of worship?’ someone asked. To worship is to adore, to stand in awe and in reverence of someone or something greater and higher. It is an act of looking beyond oneself. It is to recognize that it is not about you. True worship actually saves you from pride and arrogance. It involves who is being worshiped and the person doing the worship.
Our Bible reading is an encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus asked her for water but considering the rift between Jews and Samaritans, she was not inclined to giving Jesus water (John 4:9). However, Jesus used that opportunity to reach out to her. He answered her, ‘if thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked to him, and he would have given thee living water’ (John 4:10). Jesus used the familiar to discuss the unfamiliar. Her attention was drawn to what matter most – Jesus Christ because He is ‘the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me’ (John 14:6). He is the truth and when He ascended into heaven after resurrection, He gave us another Comforter, the Holy Spirit.
Dear friends, true worship starts with knowing the Person of Jesus Christ. It is in seeking Him with the whole of your heart and daily walking with Him. Here’s how Jesus puts it: ‘But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him’ (John 4:23). Jesus is the ONLY way to the Father no matter what the world says. So the value of worship is first to recognize Jesus’ sacrifice of giving His life for the remission of our sins and whosoever that come unto Him will not die but have everlasting life. That is where true worship starts!
