A Soldier of Christ (III)

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:11

Bible Reading: Ephesians 6:10-18

Our Bible reading today is an instruction to a soldier. In fact, Apostle Paul used military terms because of his letter to soldiers of Christ Jesus. He instructs: ‘put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil’. Armour is a protective covering used to prevent damage from being inflicted on an object, individual, etc. Without armour, a soldier may be injured when s/he goes to the battlefield. Apostle Paul reiterated that ‘our wrestle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places’ (Ephesians 6:12). Thus, we have to be equipped and constantly wear the whole armour of God.

A soldier is incomplete without their armour. It is not a coincidence that we are called soldiers of Christ. Again, the apostle Paul instructs, put on the whole armour of Christ that you may be able to stand on the evil day. Armour is used by soldiers going to the battlefield. As Christians, we are on the battlefield and the ‘weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4ff).

Dear friends, you are we are soldiers of Christ Jesus and we cannot win this battle if we do not put on the whole armour of Christ. Apostle Paul outlined what this armour contains: loins girt about with truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, helmet of salvation, the sword of the spirit (which is the word of God) and prayer. There is a need to stand up and fight as soldiers of Christ Jesus. We fight in the place of prayer appropriating the victory we have in Christ Jesus. May the eyes of our understanding be enlightened so that we may know who we are in Christ Jesus.

Self-Reflection: Are you fully equipped as a soldier of Christ?

Daily Confession: Lord Jesus help me to take on the whole armour of God every day as I build a relationship with you, amen

Intercessory prayer: I pray for children of God worldwide for the grace to endure hardship for Jesus Christ.

Hymn: Stand up, stand up for Jesus,

Ye soldiers of the cross;

Lift high his royal banner,

It must not suffer loss.

From victory unto victory

His army shall he lead,

Till every foe is vanquished,

And Christ is Lord indeed.
