“Abide in Me”: Jesus’ Instruction
Remain in Me, and I [will remain] in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine, neither can you [bear fruit, producing evidence of your faith] unless you remain in Me”. (John 15:4, AMP)
Bible Reading: John 15:1-11
In our reading today, Jesus shares the secret to producing good and lasting fruit, “Abide in me”. The more we abide or remain in Him, the richer and finer the fruit we will produce will be. For the next few days, we will examine Jesus’ words.
Jesus was not making a suggestion or recommendation. It was an instruction. This is an important instruction which is meant to be obeyed. Most times we don’t take the chapter as an instruction from Jesus because if we do and understand the importance of abiding in Him, we will pay the price to abide. Jesus started with a bold statement, “I am the Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser”. He points to the fact that He is the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus (14:6). Interestingly, Jesus made the statement a chapter before John 15. The Father prunes, trains, shapes and cultivates the vine. Jesus’ instruction sets the stage by pointing us to the Triune God. He gives us insight into salvation which Jesus paid the price on the cross of Calvary. Jesus’ instruction started in a powerful way and it points us to the Giver of life and the relationship between Him and His Father. Jesus would later use this analogy to teach us the need to abide in Him. Jesus shows us an existing model and how we have to pattern our lives accordingly so that we can bear fruit. Due to the fact that the Father is the vinedresser or the husbandman, He takes away every branch that beareth fruit and he purges every branch that bears fruit. For our lives to bear more fruit, we have to then remain in Him. Dear friends, are you obeying Jesus’ instruction to abide in Him?
