“Abide in Me”: What does it mean?
Remain in Me, and I [will remain] in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine, neither can you [bear fruit, producing evidence of your faith] unless you remain in Me”. (John 15:4, AMP)
Bible Reading: John 15:1-11
Yesterday, we started the series, “Abide in Me” by reflecting on John 15. We noted that Jesus’ words are instructions to Christians. It was not a suggestion or recommendation, rather it was a command that has many implications. What are the implications? First, the extent to which we abide in Him is the extent to which He will abide in us, “abide in me and I in you” (John 15:4a). If we want God to abide in us, then we have to abide in Him. Secondly, producing fruit is totally dependent on abiding in Him, “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abides in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me” (John 15:4b). Thirdly, our sufficiency is in and of Him so abiding in Him is critical to our survival and fruit-bearing as children of God, “…for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5c). Fourth, there are degrees to fruit-bearing and the more we abide in Him, the more we bring forth richer and fine fruit, “He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit” (John 15:5b). Finally, since fruitfulness is tied to abiding, there are earthly and eternal consequences whether we choose or refuse to abide in Him, “If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:6-7). In the next few days, we will examine these implications closely. Dear friend, to abide is to remain in God’s word. It is to desire the sincere milk of the word of God and devote yourself to prayer. It is to develop an intimacy with the Holy Spirit. I encourage you to focus on Jesus and receive the grace to abide in Him.
