An Easy Follower
For the Lord had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee. Exodus 33:5 [KJV]
Bible Reading: Exodus 15
Leadership is a load of work and leading a difficult people can make leadership experience more challenging. The Israelites were a difficult people to lead. They complained about everything. God even called them “stiff-necked people” (Exodus 33:5), stubborn and arrogant. They were never satisfied. For instance, they complained that because Moses demanded from Pharaoh to release the people to worship in a promised land, Pharaoh made things worse for them (Exodus 5:1-22); complained and told Moses “leave us alone” (Exodus 14:11-12); complained about the bitter water; God turned it to sweet (Exodus 15:22); complained about being hungry; God give them Manna (Exodus 16:1-4), complained about being thirsty (Exodus 17:1-4); Miriam and Aaron complained about Moses’ leadership (Number 12:1-12); complained about how difficult it is to conquer the giants (Numbers 12:1-10); and complained and wanted to kill Moses and even tried to select another leader (Exodus 14:10). And the list continues. These complaints attracted God’s punishments and Moses had to plead for the Israelites on many occasions (Exodus 33, 34). The children of Israel were not easy to lead. They wanted things done their own way, had obsessive appetite for comfort and convenience, and even when God was leading them through Moses for their own good, they still rebelled. In short, that generation was rebellious against God and gave Moses tough time to really lead them despite Moses’ love and concern for them. Dear friend, are you easy to lead? Are you humble and teachable? Are you submissive to authority? As we start another series on “Being An Easy Follower”, I encourage you to consider your ways. Do you give people that God has placed over you burden and trouble in their leadership assignment? May God open His word unto us by the Holy Spirit and transform our lives in Jesus name.
Daily Confession: Lord I receive the grace to be an easy follower in Jesus name.
