An Intentional Decision

Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. Luke 9:23-24 (NLT)

Bible Reading: I Kings 19:19-21

The decision to follow Jesus has to be an intentional decision because it will take some things from you. Making Jesus both the Saviour and the Lord over your life means, you are receiving His gift of salvation and His kingship. His Lordship means you are under His authority. Many Christians see Jesus as their Saviour but not necessarily as their Lord. Accepting salvation is easy but accepting Christ’s lordship is where the working out of our salvation lies because it requires surrendering our will to Him. God gave us the power of choice– and He wants us to get to that point where we will give Him everything for His glory. Like Apostle Paul, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20, NIV). In our memory verse today, Jesus speaking outlines the cost of discipleship– “if any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, takeup your cross daily, and follow me”. (vs 23). Giving up our own way means submitting to Him so that He can lead and guide us. This is exactly Elisha’s response when he was anointed by Elijah. Elisha abandoned everything and followed Elijah. Dear friends, following Jesus will cost you something, if it does not cost you something, then you are not yet following Him as He wants. It might cost you letting go relationships, habits and some lifestyle. Whatever it cost you, you will receive hundred folds in return. I encourage you to invite the Holy Spirit to examine your life. Are you totally surrendered to Jesus? Is He both your Lord and Saviour? What has your walk with God cost you recently?
