Building Right Relationship

It is an honor for a man to cease from strife and keep aloof from it, but every fool will quarrel. Proverbs 20:3

Bible Reading: Proverbs 24:3-4

Today’s reflection centers on relationships in Christian homes. We all have expectations, both realistic and unrealistic. For instance, husband to wife and vice versa, parents to children and children to parents. In fact, research on family relationships has shown that many quarrels, divorces and breakups are the results of unmet expectations. Also, we have been trained to apportion responsibilities and have high expectations of others. While this is important because it helps define certain things, orderliness and responsibility in society, it will be helpful if we don’t overload people with too many expectations, especially in our relationship. Embrace people for who they are, and love them for who they are and not for who you want them to be.

An important counsel king Solomon offers in our Bible reading is to avoid strife. In building the right relationship, strife continuously surfaces because relationships involve different people, with different personalities, experiences, exposure, background and training. However, it takes deliberate effort to avoid quarrels, heated debates, arguments and strife that cause despair and enmity. Can two walk together unless they agree? (Amos 3:3). If we do not err in words, we have done ourselves a great thing (James 3:2). Thus, be slow to speak but quick to hear, allow the Holy Spirit to give you a fresh perspective, and be patient and tolerate one another, and shun anger because anger lies in the heart of a fool (Eccl. 7:9). Give people excuses, avoid the pitfall of running into many assumptions, correct in love, and live in love. Dear friends, the Holy Spirit can teach you the ways you can live amicably in your homes. Thus, rely on Him because by the arms of flesh shall no man prevail.

Self-Reflection: God’s word has the best recipe to enjoy His peace in our homes, study it!

Daily Confession: Lord let Your peace reign in my home, restore Your peace to troubled homes and help me to continually live in the reality of Your word in Jesus’ name.

Intercessory prayer: I speak the peace of God over homes experiencing turmoil in Jesus’ name.

Hymn: God give us Christian homes!

Homes where the Bible is love and taught,

Homes where the Master’s will is sought,

Homes crowned with beauty Your love has wrought;

God give us Christian homes;

God give us Christian homes!
