Correction with Love (II)
Correct the son, and he shall give thee rest, yes, he shall give delight unto the soul. Proverbs 29:17
Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:5-12
In yesterday’s devotional we established that the foundation of God’s relationship with us is His love for us and that as God’s own, we must be subject unto him and yield to His corrections at all times. And according to Hebrews 12:6 “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth”. The Oxford dictionary defines chasten as discipline, rebuke or punish, it also means to purify. So, God corrects us to purify us and to make us better. What then should be our attitude to God’s correction? First, we must not despise God’s correction, and this is also applicable to our relationship with our parents. When we look down on or disrespect God’s correction we miss out on the blessing we ought to receive as sons, because correction is for sons. Secondly, we must not give up on or resist God’s correction, we must submit to correction for the purpose of discipline. From our memory verse, parents are urged to correct their children as this will bring rest and gladness of heart. When a child is well-disciplined, the parents are at peace that wherever the child goes, such child will not bring them shame. There is a popular saying that charity begins at home and this must be our guiding principle in our relationship with our children. The best model of correction is God’s relationship with man as explained in Hebrews 12:5-12. Some benefits of correction as outlined in this Bible passage are that it brings life and it produces the fruit of righteousness in us. This means a right standing with God and a lifestyle and attitude that conforms to God’s will and purpose.
