Desiring God.

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. John 14:23

Bible Reading: John 14: 15-23

The words of Jesus are purposeful and they are filled with great power. In the opening passage of John 14, Jesus started talking about His ascension to heaven and God’s promise of a mansion for us in heaven. Jesus also admonished his disciples about God’s promise of the Holy Spirit after His departure and how the Holy Spirit will abide with the believers forevermore. However, Jesus did specify a precondition to experience the Holy Spirit when he instructed the disciples to keep His commandments which is loving God and loving our neighbours as ourselves. Obedience to Christ’s two-fold command guarantees the coming of the Holy Spirit and friendship with God, according to verse 16, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever”. The Holy Spirit is to abide with us for ever, not for a while or for a span of time but for ever until we see Jesus.

To experience greater workings of the Holy Spirit in us and through us, we must love God and our neighbours and we must be ready to obey God’s command. Love itself is a command. As we obey and love God, we have the ability to love our neighbours, the two go hand-in-hand. Love God and love your neighbour, we cannot obey one and leave out the other, it is not a pick and choose situation. Also, obedience is our demonstration of our love for God, if you love God you obey Him.

As a result of our love and obedience to God, Christ promised that we will experience God’s love and enjoy relationship with God in the sense of God dwelling in us.

Intercessory Prayer: Pray for the widows and orphans that God will send help to them speedily.

Daily Confession: I am filled with God’s love, I desire His love more each day and God’s Holy Spirit dwells within me.

Hymn: I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith,
And be closer drawn to Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.
