Final Instructions

I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. I Timothy 6:14

Bible Reading: I Timothy 6: 11-21

For the past few days, we have been studying Apostle Paul’s instructions and counsel to his spiritual son, Timothy. The first book of Timothy opens our eyes to the benefits of the right instructions and godly counsel which are needed for life. Today, I’d like us to do a recap of this book by highlighting some key commands of Paul to Timothy.

Firstly, throughout Paul’s letter to Timothy, he anchors his instructions on love from a pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith. He reiterates the need for godliness which is a training that we have to submit ourselves to as Christians as we look unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith (Hebrew 12:2). Also, Paul guides Timothy as to how to direct the affairs of the church of God, and how to avoid heresy, quarrel and disputes in the church. He reminds Timothy to shun ungodly chatter. The message is Christ Jesus, and anything different from that is simply heresy. The essence of Paul’s epistle to Timothy is “in keeping with the prophecies” once made about Timothy so that by following these instructions, Timothy may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience” (I Timothy 1:18-19a).

Furthermore, in the last part of this epistle, Paul reminds his son the following: “fight the good fight of faith”, and “take hold of eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses” ‚ “guard what has been entrusted to your care”, and “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness”. These instructions are foundational to our walk with God and relevant to our relevance in the kingdom. Like Paul, I charge you to “guard what has been entrusted to your care, turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith. Grace be with you”.
