Focus on God and Growth: Lessons from David (II)
So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands (Psalms 78:72, NKJV)
Bible Reading: Psalm 55
We examined the life of King David yesterday. A man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). David was far from perfect. He had his ups and down and his successes and failures. What made David stand out was the fact his heart was pointed to God. He desired God and did everything to pursue a continual relationship with God. David was a strong believer in God. He had faith in God. In David’s encounter with Goliath, David said, “the Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.’ And Saul said to David, ‘Go, and the Lord be with you!” (1 Samuel 17:37).
Secondly, David loved the law of God. He took God’s law as absolute. Psalm 119 is a testimony to David’s reliance on and belief in God’s law. He studied, meditated and lived by God’s law every day. Because he loved the law of the Lord, he adored it. He puts it thus: “For I delight in your commands because I love them. I lift up my hands to your commands, which I love, and I meditate on your decrees” (Psalm 119:47-48).
Finally, David was thankful, and he repented whenever he sinned. He was humble to acknowledge God and thanked God at all times. No wonder the love of a forgiving Father met his imperfection. The book of Psalms contains the unending of the Almighty God. In the case of Bethsheba, David immediately turned to God in repentance (Psalm 51). Dear friends, may these virtues become part of our lives in Jesus’ name.
Daily Confession: Lord Jesus, help me give myself to You so I can be who you want me to be.
Intercessory prayer: Pray for hospitals, police stations, fire departments and other first responders for grace, protection and wisdom to handle delicate situations in Jesus’ name.
Hymn: I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
‘Lord, plant my feet on higher ground’
