From Paul With Love
Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith. I Timothy 1:18
Bible Reading: I Timothy 1
The book of Timothy is an instruction manual written by a father to his son. Passionate about equipping Timothy because of the ministerial grace, unction and commitment bestowed on Timothy, Apostle Paul wrote the book in order to highlight right patterns that will guide behaviours, inform decisions, and shape perspective. The book is considered as one of the pastoral epistles as it contains counsels to a younger colleague and delegates on how to relate and carry out certain responsibilities in the ministry. Beyond instructions on criteria to selecting Christian leaders, what is expected of a Christian leader, and responsibilities of Christian leaders, the book is a counsel first to Timothy. I consider this important because when we receive God’s word, we are to apply its principles first to our lives. Apostle Paul exemplifies this truth throughout the book as he used himself as an example of how God’s word has transformed him from being a chief sinner to an ambassador of Christ in chains for the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Apostle Paul amplifies the need for righteousness, holiness, godliness, moderacy in all things, and godly behaviour that will advance the kingdom of God. Right instructions are important to life and destiny, and it is a blessing to have right instructors.
Furthermore, throughout the book, the writer commanded and instructed Timothy in love that is characterized by a pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith. While it is important to consider instructions God brings your way, it is equally necessary to carefully ponder on these questions: Why and how you instruct others? Are your instructions genuinely from a pure heart? Do you apply God’s word to your life before you send them out? May God bless His word in our hearts. Amen
Self-Reflection: Why and how do you instruct? Are your instructions genuinely from a pure heart? Do you apply God’s word to your life before you send them out?
