God’s remnant for this generation

Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him. I Kings 19:18 (NKJV)

Bible Reading: I Kings 19

God is the God of generations, dispensations, times and seasons. He enthrones and dethrones kings, raises and ends kingdoms, appoints and disappoints times and seasons etc. Ask kings like Pharaoh, Saul and Nebuchadnezzar, etc., and they will tell you the greatness of our God. God reigns in His majesty. This is why God cannot be stranded. Although the world is characterized by impurity, ungodliness and godlessness, God still has remnants that He has preserved and kept for Himself. These remnants are devoted unto the Lord and refuse to bow to any god. In today’s Bible reading, after Prophet Elijah declared that there won’t be rain in Israel, the Lord provided for him through the raven by Kerith Ravine, a brook (I Kings 17:2-6) and the widow of Zarephath when the brook dried up (I Kings 17:7-24). In the third year of the severe famine, Elijah presented himself to king Ahab at God’s word. This led to the conquest that ensued on Mount Carmel (I Kings 18). Finally, Elijah prayed and rain poured on the land of Israel again after three and half years (Luke 4:25-26). However, after Prophet Elijah’s victory in the conquest against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Jezebel threatened Prophet Elijah and Elijah prayed to the Lord to end his life since he assumed he was the only one left that stood for God (I Kings 19:14). You know many times we assume that because of how unrighteous the world is, there are no remnants. At such moments, the pilgrim’s journey may seem lonely and challenging but the good news is that God has remnants across the nations of the world. No matter how unholy, corrupt, difficult, hostile and challenging a society may be against the gospel and godly living, God has in stock those who are loyal to Him. In fact, the temptation may be overwhelming, persecution may be terrible, and it may seem we are helpless, be sure that God has made provision for his beloved to be strengthened and encouraged. It is important to constantly remind ourselves that we are sojourners here on earth and there are fellow faithful and righteous sojourners even though we may not know them. Do not think that you are the only devoted, righteous and faithful child of God because that is a show of pride and ignorance. Finally, let us learn to intercede for other Christians in different parts of the world.

Self-Reflection: Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen (Acts 20:21).

Intercessory prayer: Pray for Christians in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.

Daily Confession: Lord deliver me from the sin of presumption. Open my eyes to constantly see that Your Presence is with me. Help Your remnant in this world who have chosen to abide in You. May we stand forever in You, help us to the end and for those who have backslidden, Lord restore them, and may we not compromise our stand in you in Jesus’ name

Hymn: Jesus, lead Thou on

Till our rest is won;

And although the way is cheerless;

We will follow calm and fearless

Guide us by Thy hand
