He Owns Everything

For from Him [all things originate] and through Him [all things live and exist] and to Him are all things [directed]. To Him be glory and honor forever! Amen. Romans 11:36 (AMP)

Bible Reading: Psalm 24

For the next few days, our study will focus on Psalm 24. It is one of the psalms David wrote including the preceding chapter, Psalm 23. The source of the inspiration for this psalm is the Spirit of God. This is because ‘All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work’ (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Some Bible scholars have also noted that since David was a harpist, whenever he played, the Spirit of God came upon him to give him utterance. Psalm 24 has inspired many teachings, preaching, hymns and songs. It has blessed humanity tremendously and it is still blessing us.

This psalm has ten lines and we will focus on lines 1-2 today. ‘The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness of it, the world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas; And established it upon the streams and the rivers’ (Psalm 24:1-2). Isn’t it refreshing to know the Person who owns the earth? It is empowering to know that our heavenly Father is the maker of heaven and earth. Each time I read this, there is a level of confidence I find because I know who owns the heavens and the earth. He is the Almighty God, the Creator of heaven and earth, the Alpha and Omega, the Uncaused that caused all things to be. He brought all things into existence and without Him, nothing was made. The psalmist continues, God owns the fullness of the earth. Let’s take a few minutes to think about that. The earth is full of resources and if not for its fullness, we would have exhausted oxygen, plants would not have grown, and sun and rain would have been lacking. The first two lines take us directly to the creation story – the Creator and the created things. It reminds us of God’s creative work in six days. God founded it upon the seas and established it upon the streams and the rivers and ‘the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2).

Finally, God owns everything including you who dwell in it. That’s why you can’t plan your birth and your death. This is at God’s ultimate discretion. The first two lines of Psalm 24 acknowledge the Creator of heaven and earth and its implication is that we should return the glory to God, the maker of all things. And we should live our lives to please Him.
