Imitate Christ (I)

Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. John 5:19

Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:1-2

Our tour guide gave the kids a simple instruction: “follow me, and do exactly what you see me do”. My class excursion to the community zoo was eventful and exciting as the kids saw live animals we had discussed in class. However, as fun-filled, as the escapade was, one of the pupils decided to leave the group and wandered off to the forest on his own. Although nothing bad happened to him we were disturbed and we suffered before we finally found him, trapped among bush thorns.

The rule of imitation is similar to the tour guide’s instruction in our story today: “follow me”. It means customizing your life according to the leading of the person being imitated. Although it is said that imitation is a limitation, there is an exception to that rule in our walk with God because becoming like Jesus is the ultimate goal. As Christians, we are to imitate Jesus Christ (Heb. 12:2). He is the author and the finisher of our faith. He is our perfect example. Imitating Christ Jesus means following Him and living according to His word. Jesus Christ when he was on earth imitated his heavenly Father. He said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise” (John 5:19).

We have to ensure that our response is not like that of the kid in our story today. Instead of wandering away, let’s abide in Him and follow Christ. Imitating Christ requires that we know and understand his word. It also means that before we do anything, we ask “what will Jesus do?” In fact, imitating Christ takes sacrifice, perseverance, trust, obedience, humility, and sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit. May God help us as we follow Christ wholeheartedly.

Self-Reflection: A life that will imitate Christ Jesus needs to be fully surrendered unto Him. Is your life fully surrendered unto God?

Daily Confession: Jesus, help me to follow and imitate You in all I do.

Intercessory prayer: May our children set the Lord before them. And may prodigal sons and daughters find their way home.

Hymn: When we walk with the Lord

In the light of His Word,

What a glory He sheds on our way;

While we do His good will,

He abides with us still,

And with all who will trust and obey.
