Intercede for Your City

Bible Reading: Genesis 18:16-33

Did you know you are in the city you live for a purpose? As children of God, our location is crucial and God leads us to fulfil His plan in and through us. The city you live is important in God’s plan and as children of God, we need to intercede for our city more. When was the last time you prayed for your city? How often do you pray for your city and the people that live in it? Many times we forget that we are meant to take charge and declare “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). God is interested in your city. In fact, many prophecies in the Bible were either for or against cities. For example, God instructed prophet Jonah to speak to the city of Nineveh about their sins and thank God the city repented of their sins before God (Jonah 1-3). When God speaks of the city, He refers to everything in it— including the animals.

In our reading today, Abraham interceded for the city of Sodom and Gomorrah when God revealed his plan to destroy the city. Abraham was concerned to the point that he had to negotiate the terms of the destruction with God. God can look at your own righteousness and bring peace upon your city. Abraham understood this and he dialogued with God: “And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked? (Genesis 18:23). Unfortunately, God couldn’t find ten righteous people in Sodom and Gomorrah and the city was destroyed. Perhaps, Abraham thought Lot would have influenced more than 10 individuals unto righteousness in Sodom and Gomorrah.

Also, preach the gospel of Jesus. Evangelize the salvation that is found in Christ Jesus to your neighbours and let the life of Christ show through and in you both in words and in deeds. This is how Jesus puts it: “Let your light also so shine before men that they see your good works and glorify your Father that is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14). Dear friends, let us trust God to take away selfishness from our lives so that we can start taking possession of our city for Jesus.

Daily Confession: In the name of Jesus, I declare the light of God over my city (mention the name of your city. Let darkness disappear and righteousness replace every unrighteousness is Jesus name. No poverty and I pray for growth and God’s peace in Jesus name.

Intercessory prayer: pray for your city with specific information and things you have observed.
