Jacob’s Encounter in Bethel
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Genesis 28:15
Bible Reading: Genesis 28:10-19
Jacob had cunningly taken the blessings meant for Esau, his twin brother and was fleeing imminent death as a result of Esau being angry with him. Originally, Jacob took  the birthright of Esau in exchange for bread and pottage which Jacob cooked. Jacob used the advantage of his delicious meal to snatch that which God had given to his brother Esau from their conception. Today, how many people are deceived and miss their divine destinies because of their love for food and uncontrolled appetite. For some, it might not be the desire for food but anything that consumes our passion and we do not mind giving up the divine for it. To save his life from Esau his brother, Jacob mother, Rebekah counseled him to flee Canaan for Laban, his uncle’s place in Haran and on his way, he had an encounter with God.On his way to Haran, God showed Jacob a vision of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven and God’s angels ascending and descending on it. On top of the ladder was the Almighty God standing and God spoke to Jacob about what He is about to do in his life. Jacob’s encounter in Bethel was to remind him of his covenant with Abraham his grandfather, God also had to prepare Jacob for the challenges ahead in Haran and assure him of his divine presence as Jacob journeys into the unknown. Life is full of many uncertainties, as believers, we must constantly seek God’s face in all we do. Regardless of our level of understanding, God’s direction is the ultimate. Just like God pardoned Jacob for his deceitful past and gave him a fresh start on his way to Haran, He can give you a new beginning. Jacob believed God and he raised an altar to remind himself of God’s covenant with him.
