Jonah’s Disobedience
And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord ? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22
Bible Reading: Jonah 1
Jonah was a great prophet who heard directly from the Lord. He was highly favoured of the Lord and he enjoyed God’s mercy. Jonah was such a rare prophet, a prophet whose words had the capacity to transform lives including an entire city. Despite Jonah’s anointing, he disobeyed God. Disobedience is a sin we all have to watch out for and guard against no matter your spiritual status and maturity. God instructed Jonah “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me” (Jonah 1:2). However, “Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord” (Jonah 1:3). Jonah’s rebellion made him run away from God’s presence. He forgot that he cannot run away from God’s presence. God’s mercy interrupted Jonah’s journey and God’s unimaginable means of transportation (fish) took Jonah to Nineveh. Jonah’s rebellion against God’s instruction was based on Jonah’s understanding of God’s nature as a merciful God. Jonah did not want to look like a liar because if he prophecies doom for the city of Nineveh and the people turn away from their unrighteousness, he knew God will forgive them. And that was the exactly what happened. The people heard Nineveh’s message and were deeply touched. Godly sorrow brings repentance, the people turned from their wicked ways and God did not punish them. Dear friends, no matter how far you have gone away from God, He is ready to take you back if you can run back to Him.
