Learn to Observe

Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers. Deuteronomy 8:1 (NKJV)

Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 8:1-3

Someone once said that if every Christian could live according to the word of God they have heard, the world will be a better place. For instance, annual conventions, monthly special programs, weekly sermons, daily devotionals etc., across churches, ministries, and denominations are opportunities to encounter the word of God. As Jesus said in John 15, we have to invest and be committed to abiding by the word of God. In James 1:22, we are encouraged to be hearers and doers of the word because we do not profit if we only hear but refuse to obey God’s instruction. This means we have to learn to obey or observe God’s word.

To observe means to perceive, notice and consider something as important. It also means to comply with an instruction. First, observing requires paying attention. It also implies having an open heart to diligently learn and carefully consider God’s word. It is a discipline that one must learn. It takes a lot of effort and consciousness to be a good observer. In our reading today, Moses instructed the children of Israel to carefully observe and yield to God’s instructions. If the children of Israel learn to diligently observe God’s command of holiness and righteousness, then, there are benefits that will follow: longevity, multiplication and possession of the inheritance. In essence, living according to God’s word attracts God’s blessings. Here’s the point: discipline is important in our Christian race and it is a learning that we must submit ourselves to. Therefore, learn to carefully observe God’s commandments for the glory of God.

Self-Reflection: Discipline is crucial to life and destiny. Discipline yourself to obey God’s word and instructions.

Daily Confession: I receive the grace to submit myself to right discipline and learn to observe God’s instruction continually.

Intercessory prayer: Give our children obedient hearts to follow your word every day in Jesus’ name.

Hymn: Lord lift me up, and let me stand

By faith on heaven stable land

Higher plane that I am found

Lord plant my feet on higher ground.
