Only Except the Lord Builds

But you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this. And you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. Daniel 5:22-23 (NKJV)

Bible Reading: Daniel 5:22-30

Except the Lord help you, no one can help you (Psalm 121:1). This truth should humble us because we are products of God’s mercy and grace. The reality that God is the Source and He continually performs miracles on our behalf is enough to keep us grateful and humble. Let us further examine the life of king Belshazzar to see God’s word in action because indeed “except the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain” (Psalm 127:1).

King Belshazzar was king Nebuchadnezzar’s son. He obviously never learnt from his father’s experience. Due to pride and a heart raised against the Lord, king Nebuchadnezzar lived in the forest as an animal for seven years. However, when his son Belshazzar ascended the throne, he dishonoured God. God is our Source, for from him and through him and to him are all things (Romans 11:36). He holds our life in His hands. God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble (2 Peter 5:17). Acknowledge God in all your ways. It means centring God at all times. It also meant not to personalize the glory and honour meant for God. Dear friend, God wants to exalt your horn like that of the unicorn, however, you need to humble yourself before him. God Almighty has absolute power over all things. May this truth help us to reverence God who is our Source because “it is not by our power or might but by the Spirit of the living God” (Zechariah 4:6).
