The Holy God (I)
The Lord said to Moses, ‘Speak to Israel’s people. They must be holy because I am holy. You must tell them that. (Leviticus 19:1-2, EASY)
Bible Reading: Leviticus 10
God is holy. There is no other way to say it. God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). God is constant. He was holy yesterday, He is today and He will be tomorrow till eternity. To be holy is to be without blemish. It means to be faultless, spotless and blameless. I feel we don’t speak enough of God’s holiness. God cannot compromise who He is because He does not want you to feel offended. God hates sin. “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14, KJV).
In the book of Levitus, God instructs the Children of Israel. He outlines the procedure and processes for worship. God is detailed and specific and the Book of Leviticus shows exactly that. In our reading today, Aaron’s children, Nadab and Abihu “took their ceremonial censers, put fire in them, placed incense on it and offered “strange (unauthorized, unacceptable) fire before the Lord, [an act] which He had not commanded them to do.” (Leviticus 10:1) Fire came out of God’s presence and devoured them and they died. Here’s what the Lord told Moses to tell Aaron, “I will be treated as holy by those who approach me, and before all the people I will be honored” (Leviticus 10:3). Aaron’s sons were killed because they approached God in holiness– whether knowingly or unknowingly, the strange fire was an act of disobedience, uncleaniness or rebellion before the Lord which God judged immediately. What’s the point: Grace is not a license to sin. Grace is not an invitation to unholiness. Apostle Paul asks, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” (Romans 6:1-2). Dear friends, follow God’s instruction, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16, KJV).
Daily Confession: Lord “search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
Intercessory Prayer: We pray for God’s mighty act to showforth in our nations in Jesus name.
