Letter Kills but The Spirit Gives Life (II)

[I always pray] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son]. Ephesians 1:17

Bible Reading: Ephesians 1:15-23

Apostle Paul understood the need for true revelation of and from God. We cannot grow beyond our revelation of God, hence Apostle Paul’s prayer. His prayer is important because it outlines important spiritual virtues we should desire as Christians. He knew that knowledge puffs up (1 Corinthians 8:1) but God’s Spirit gives eternal life. God’s divine power that has given to us all that pertains to life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory (2 Peter 1:3-4). Also, his excellence is at work in us by the power of the Spirit of God in us (Philippians 2:13).

Today’s reading is one of Apostle Paul’s prayers to the faithful, steadfast and saints of Christ Jesus who were at Ephesus. His prayer shifts our attention to spiritual substance we should desire in our walk with God. Paul’s prayer helps us understand that God’s spirit should be at work in our lives regardless of what we do so that Christ can be revealed to us, in us and through us. Then we can truly live in the reality our identity in Christ Jesus. Apostle Paul knew that when the eyes of our understanding is enlightened, the journey of knowing and cherishing the hope we have in Christ Jesus begins. Here’s the point: earnestly seek to encounter God. As you fellowship with God through prayers, bible study, evangelism and in everything we do etc., may the Holy Spirit encounter your life. No longer shall we operate at the level of the letter for knowledge without the Holy Spirit puffs up. May the Spirit of God impress the truth of God’s word into our heart so that we can be who God wants us to be.

Self-Reflection: When was the last time you sought the Lord to reveal Himself to you through His word?

Action Point: Change your attitude to God’s word (the Bible)

Intercessory prayer: I pray for a fresh desire for the sincere milk of the Word in my generation in Jesus’ name.

Daily Confession: And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the [g]saints (God’s people), and [so that you will begin to know] what the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His [active, spiritual] power is in us who believe. Ephesians 1:18-19 (AMP)

Hymn: Give us o Lord thine unction,

Anoint us for thine work,

Arise and set us in motion,

O Lord the Man of war.
