The Miracle of Sight: Add Self Control

… and in your knowledge, self control… 2 Peter 1:6a

Bible reading: Proverbs 25:28; James 1:19-21

The Bible describes anyone who lacks self-control like a ‘city whose walls are broken down. This means that self-control is like a gate. It protects and serves as security against marauding forces. We all know what happens if a house does not have a door. Such a house is prone to attack by human, animal, and natural elements. There is a reason Apostle Peter admonishes us to add self-control to our faith. Like a bridle to a horse, so is self-control to any human being. Being self-controlled as children of God is important because it protects us from many evils. There are many problems that some Christians would have avoided if they were self-controlled. Also, if you don’t have self-control over your knowledge, you might become a nuisance, especially when you speak when not needed. Through self-control, you will learn that you do not always share what you know. Apostle Paul admonishes, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” (James 1:19-21). Dear friends, self-control can be learned and mastered. Seek the Lord, study yourself, read books on self-control, learn about self-control and start practicing it with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Action point: I encourage you to read a book on the subject of self-control.

Daily Confession: Lord, help me add self-control to my knowledge.

Intercessory prayer: Pray for God’s peace across nations.

Hymn: We have an anchor that keeps the soul

steadfast and sure while the billows roll;

fastened to the Rock which cannot move,

grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love!
