The Revelation of Jesus

“And Jesus answered and said unto Him, Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. “

Matthew 16:17

Bible Reading: Matthew 16:13-20

A beautiful portion of the Bible resonates with me whenever I hear or read ‘The revelation of Jesus’ in Ephesians 1: 18 states ” The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints”. When Jesus asked his disciples if they knew who he was, it was in a bid to find out if moving around with him and seeing him perform many miracles, signs and wonders actually meant anything to them. He wanted to know if they are inspired by the way he lived his life and how knowledgeable of him they were. It is possible to be with someone for many years without actually knowing the person, the Bible says “no one can know the heart of man” Jeremiah 17:9.

Surprisingly, even we as human beings might not really know ourselves deeply, except when we are confronted with certain situations, whether good or bad. I pray that our experiences will be such that will bring out the best in us at all times in Jesus name.

Also, Jesus asked his disciples, but whom do you say that I am?, to know if actually they are learning from Him as their master. Jesus’ deeds and actions on earth were supernatural, no one could understand him, not even the disciples that were with him everyday. That is why some people called him John the Baptist, others said he was Elijah or Jeremiah or simply one of the prophets.

The disciples could not actually tell who Jesus was except Peter and that was when Jesus replied and said unto him ‚Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven‚ (Matthew 16:17). Knowing Jesus and having a relationship with him is not something that can be done by our human might and understanding, it actually takes commitment and a deep revelation, gotten through the help of the Holy Spirit. Hence, the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:3, “Wherefore, I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.” Jesus knew who he was, he understood God’s purpose and mission for his life and he fulfilled it.

Self Reflection: God is revealed in the person of Jesus and in His word.

Daily Confession: Lord Jesus, I thank you because you are my Lord, reveal yourself to me again.
