The Whole Duty of Man (I)
“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverted mouth, I hate”. Proverbs 8:13 (NKJV)
Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
By the time King Solomon got to Ecclesiastes 12:13, he had written twelve chapters with a total of two hundred and twenty verses— he was left with only two verses to conclude the book of Ecclesiastes. He had raised many matters such as the vanity of life to insights on times and seasons, observations about human’s quest for insatiable knowledge, and his own irredeemable lustful appetite for the things of this world. He decided to conclude this book with something significant, a thought that sits at the centre of his redemption as a king who started in and with God but strayed away. For king Solomon, the conclusion of the whole matter is crucial and if we can only follow it, we will be happy for it. Here’s only that matter: “Fear God, and keep his commandments…”
To fear God is to reverence Him. To acknowledge Him for who He is and give Him all the respect and honour due Him— first as God, the Creator of all things who was not created. As the redeemer who in His majesty redeemed us through His own Son, Jesus Christ. As the Emmanuel, God with us by the Holy Spirit. It means to puts Him at the centre of everything of our existence — all we do, say and live for. We live in an arrogant world— a world in which many treat God as if they are colleagues. It seems day after day the number of people who can say ‘I will not do this because I fear God’ is getting smaller. The world needs deliverance from pride and arrogance. How do we fear God? First by surrendering our hearts and our will unto Him, and acknowledge Him in all our ways. To fear God is to hate evil: pride, arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth. Dear friends, the fear of the Lord prolongs life (Proverbs 10:27; 19:23), brings confidence (Proverbs 14:26), blessings (Psalm 128:4) and mercy (Luke 1:50). May the Lord heal our hearts of pride so that we can fear Him.

All other ground is sinking sand.
