Trust and Obey
And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22
Bible Reading: Hebrews 11
For the past few days, we have been reflecting on obedience. We have examined examples from the Bible of those that obeyed and disobeyed. Today, let us meditate on this question: As a child God, why is obedience important? First, everything we do in Jesus Christ is predicated upon faith. Jesus puts it thus: “The work of God is this: to believe in the One he has sent” (John 6:29). And trust is incomplete without obedience. Our relationship and fellowship with Jesus starts with a step of faith. An obedience to the word of God to believe in redemption that is in Jesus Christ. There is no faith without obedience. Apostle Paul writes: “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Did you observe that obedience is implied in this verse? ‘Knowing that God exists’, ‘coming to Him’, and ‘diligently seeking him’ requires absolute obedience. You cannot trust without obeying.
Also, obedience is a prove of our love. If we love God we will obey Him. Again, Jesus says: “If ye love me, keep my commandment” (John 14:15). Our Bible reading today highlights heroes of faith and each of them qualified because they obeyed God’s instruction. For instance, Abraham obeyed God’s instruction when God told him to go to a land he will show him (Hebrews 11:7) and Noah listened to God, warned of God’s judgement and built an ark (Hebrews 11:8) etc. Every act of faith means an obedient response to God’s word.
Dear friends, you may have faith but if you don’t obey God’s words and yield to His instruction, your faith will be inactive and unproductive. You obey and yield to God’s word because you believe in God’s ability and integrity to fulfil His word. The Bible says, “the just shall live by faith” and to live by faith means to live a life of absolute obedience unto God (Romans 1:17). Faith is shown by the level of our obedience unto God. At KSi, we encourage you trust and obey God, for it is in doing this that your victory lies.
