Watch and Pray
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 2 Corinthians 2:11
Bible Reading: Matthew 26:34-41
Jesus used the words ‘watch and pray’ many times (Matthew 26:41; Luke 21:36). It is not by mistake that the word ‘watch’ comes before ‘pray’. To watch is to be at alert, to be on guard and to be carefully vigilant. For instance, a watchman is expected to always be on the lookout for enemies and alert the territory whenever a marauding force is approach. S/he provides his territory with any information that will help them prepare for attack and protect the territory. In Ezekiel 33:7-9, God told prophet Ezekiel about the art and act of being a watchman. Here’s how God puts it: “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. But if you do warn the wicked person to turn from their ways and they do not do so, they will die for their sin, though you yourself will be saved.” As Christians we have to be watchful and prayerful. This means obeying God’s word, not allowing the flesh and our desires of materials things to overshadow us. It means crucifying the flesh, dying to self and shunning lust for the workings of the Holy Spirit in us. Jesus warned His disciples of distractions and asked them to watch and pray without season because the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. May God help us to yield to unto Him in prayer and absolute trust in Him.
Daily Confession: I receive grace to be watchful even as I pray without ceasing. My spiritual sensitivity is awake and I focus on Jesus, the Author and the Finisher of my faith.
Intercessory prayer: Pray for those who are down in their faith for revival
Hymn: Stand up, stand up for Jesus
Ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high his royal banner,
It must not suffer loss.
From Victory unto victory
His army shall he lead,
Till every foe is vanished,
And Christ is Lord indeed
