Who Do People Say I am?
‘…Who do men say that I the Son of man am?’ (Matthew 16:13)
Bible Reading: Matthew 16:13-20
Jesus Christ asked his disciples two profound questions. The questions are important because they reveal some truth to us about our knowledge & our understanding of Jesus. In fact our response to these questions will help us know the depth, breadth, width and height of our walk with God.
The first question: who do people say I am? It is a question to echo what others around us are saying about Jesus Christ. This is important because if we are surrounded with people that hold on to wrong doctrines, revelatiom and understanding of who Jesus, we may be wrong ourselves. But if we are surrounded by people who have sound biblical truth of Jesus, our walk with God may be enriched.
Jesus’s disciples obviously have been listening to somethings that were not in resonance with who Jesus is. Here’s their response: And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. (Matthew 16:14). None of them knew who Jesus was except Peter because their comparison was wrong. Jesus was more than that. Your neighbor can be wrong about Jesus and that’s why it is important to know Jesus personally.
I understand that at the onset when we first come ome to Jesus we are guided by other’s knowledge of God but we cannot survive like that. There are some people that only live based on congregational revelation. While congregational revelation is good and important, it cannot replace personal revelation of who Jesus is. We will talk more about this tomorrow.
Dear friends, I invite you to do this exercise: ask those around you, your friends, church members etc the question Jesus asked his disciples- who do men say I am?
Daily Confession: Heavenly Father thank you for revealing Jesus to us. Help my friends, family, colleagues etc to know you in Jesus name.
Intercessory prayer: Lord give scientists wisdom as they make inventions that will benefit humanity in Jesus name.
Hymn: Knowing Jesus, knowing you
There is no greater thing
You’re my joy, my righteousness
And I love you Lord.
