Wisdom from the Early Church (I)
And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people (Acts 6:8, KJV).
Bible Reading: Acts 6:1-8
The church of God grew in power and in number. With the growth came some challenges. There was a complain that the Grecians widows were neglected by the Hebrews in the daily ministration. Instead of leaving the church because of the challenge, the Grecians widows presented their case before the church leadership. Here’s the first lesson: because it is church does not mean there wont be challenges. Rather we have to learn how to deal maturely with issues and with one another. Some people have left the church because of issues they had with other members. We have to learn to endure and honour one another.
Also, instead of justifying the actions or take the complain with levity, the twelve disciples came together to find a solution to the problem. As leaders, we have to trust God for wisdom to handle challenges that come our way as we serve God’s people. Thank God we can ask God for anything including wisdom (James 1:5). There is always a solution to every crisis if we can be patient and seek God. In our Bible reading, the resolution is to “look for seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom’ to address the challenge because attending to people’s needs should not be at the detriment of the word of God. There’s another lesson in the perspective of the twelve: Welfare is important in the church of God but it should not take the place of the word of God. A church that focuses more on welfare than teaching and preaching the word of God is not balance. In fact, welfare should compliment the undiluted teaching of the word of God. Finally, they appointed seven men to address the complaint and God’s work moved forward. May God help us to faithful stewards of whatever He commit into our hands in Jesus name, amen.
Daily Confession: Lord please help your church to be faithful and seek you whenever challenges arise in Jesus name.
Intercessory prayer: Pray for leaders in the church of God for wisdom and grace to be faithful stewards.
Hymn: Stand up, stand up for Jesus
Ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high his royal banner,
It must not suffer loss.
From Victory unto victory
His army shall he lead,
Till every foe is vanished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.
