Your Will Not Mine
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. (Luke 22:42, KJV)
Bible Reading: Matthew 26:36-46
Self-will is defined as ‘the quality of obstinately doing what one wants despite the wishes or orders of others.’ In the context of the Bible, self-will is considered part of our human nature and always strives to make the self the center of its own universe. God gave us the power of will, the quality to choose and decide to do something our own way. Every child of God has to face the will test. Jesus Christ faced the will test on his way to the Cross. It is a test that shows whether one surrender unto God or not. The creation story shows us that God didn’t create robots, He created man in His image and His likeness, and He gave man the ability to choose– to listen or disobey. We are given the power to exercise our will. However, like Apostle Paul, our desire must be for the flesh to die daily so that our will can be to do what Jesus wants. Today’s reading is about Jesus’ surrender of His will for crucifixion because he knew what the Cross would entail. Overwhelmed by the impending agony and pain, Jesus prayed earnestly in the Garden of Gethsemane to His Father, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:39). Dear friends, who and what controls your will? If you have not surrendered your life and will to Jesus, here’s an opportunity to do so.
Daily Confession: I surrender my will unto the Lord. Have Your way in my life to the glory and the honour of your name.
Intercessory prayer: Pray for students all over the world as they return to school for God’s protection, provision for parents, wisdom for teachers and grace for everyone who will perform one responsibility in the lives of the students.
Hymn: I surrender all (x2)
Unto Thee my blessed Saviour
I surrender all.
